those Bible Stories
you learned
as a child in Sunday School
through Flannelgraphs?
In today's
high-tech world of Video's, DVD's,
Video Games and the Internet, some of our
best
teaching tools have been lost in the past.
It has now been
over twenty years since the
Rev. Henry H.S. Lai currently Pastor at First
Trinity Lutheran in Oakland, Ca. asked me to
come work with him at a mission church he
had started in Union City, Ca. Henry had
just finished his vicarage and I was working
in counter-cult ministries at that time.
I asked him what he would like me to do,
he said children's ministry. I had never done
that before
and had no idea where to start.
I remembered the flannel board stories
I learned in Sunday School
as a youth
and thought, why not use
flannel boards.
I went to a friend
of mine who owned a local
Christian bookstore and purchased almost
everything he had in
the way of flannel graphs
and assorted backgrounds,
many of which I
still use to this day.
I used them to do
the Sunday School class
as well as
a children's Bible study we did
every week for
a group of
kids
at a large
apartment complex in Union City, Ca.
For many years I
used them to give the
kids a
preview of what their Sunday School
lesson was
going to be about, as well as the
occasional Children's Message at
Good Shepherd Lutheran
in Hayward, Ca.
The very same church I first
saw them so
many years ago.
Today I use them in
the same manner
for personal appearances at other
churches and schools. And as always the
adults love the stories as much as the
kids do. Sometime I like to
mix up the
stories just to see if everyone is paying
attention. I might
say
our story is about
David and Godzilla, Jacob and the Whale
or John the Methodist. Usually they are
all quick to
jump in and
correct me proving
they are paying
attention and learning the
stories I tell.
